What to do if You Suspect that Your Pet has Been Exposed to Toxins...
ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC)
The ASPCA established the APCC to help pet parents and veterinarians with poison-related emergencies. The APCC is staffed by board-certified veterinary toxicologists and professionals specially trained in veterinary toxicology. They're available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For more information call the ASPCA at 1-888-426-4911 or visit www.aspca.org/apcc. If you think that your pet may have been exposed to a poisonous substance call 1-888-426-4435. There will be a $65.00 consultation fee.
Things to Keep in Mind if You Think Your Pet May be Poisoned.
First and foremost don't panic. It's easier to say than to do, but keep in mind panicking can delay valuable time that your companion may need. If you think that your pet may have been exposed or if you catch them ingesting some type of poison try to collect any materials that may have been involved. Grab any containers that you find and collect in a sealable bag anything that has been vomited up and/or chewed. Having these items available is a great benefit when you visit us and/or speak with the APCC toxicologist. Keep the APCC phone number 1-800-426-4435 and our phone number 732-269-3600 easily available.
When calling the APCC please have the following readily available:
- The species, breed, age, sex, weight and the number of animals that may have been involved.
- The animal's symptoms.
- Any information regarding the exposure, including the agent, the amount of the agent involved and the time elapsed since the time of exposure.
- Have the product container/packaging available for reference.
